How to Wash Your 4WD Properly (The Right Way for Aussie Conditions)

Lee Pollard Director Groundswell Wash |

Pro tip before you start: Always wash your 4WD in the shade, never in direct sunlight. Harsh UV rays cause products to dry too quickly, leading to water spots, residue, and swirl marks that are hard to remove later.

Many companies claim you can just foam on a product and rinse off for a "clean" 4WD—but that's misleading and incomplete. It leaves behind salt, sand, mud particles, and grit that grind into your paint during the rinse or next drive, accelerating corrosion and scratches. Our full 8-step process uses the right tools and products to lift, remove, and protect properly, keeping your rig showroom-ready longer.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Snow foam pre-wash: Load our snow foam cannon with either Premium Wash – Beach & Salt Wash (for coastal salt and sand) or Mud Red Dirt Wash – Outback & Bush Wash (for clay, red dust, and track grime). Mix 100ml of product with 900ml of water, then lightly shake to blend.

  2. Apply foam: Spray the thick foam onto your 4WD, starting at the top and working down to the underbody and wheels. Let it dwell for 3-4 minutes to break down dirt, salt, and contaminants. Do not scrub with a mitt yet—this prevents swirl marks from trapped grit.

  3. Rinse stage 1: Use our turbo nozzle or a standard pressure washer nozzle to rinse away the loosened foam and debris thoroughly.

  4. Two-bucket wash: Fill one bucket with warm water and 100ml of your chosen wash (Premium or Mud Red Dirt). Use a second bucket with clean water. Wash panels with a microfibre mitt from the soapy bucket, then rinse the mitt in the clean bucket to drop out debris—repeat across the entire vehicle.

  5. Rinse stage 2: Blast everything again with the turbo nozzle or pressure washer to remove all soap residue.

  6. Apply protection: While the 4WD is still wet, foam on either Protective Sealer – Beach & Salt (ideal for corrosion protection after beach runs) or Hydro Protection Foam – Outback & Bush (for quick-drying hydrophobicity after dusty tracks). Mix 100ml with 900ml water, shake lightly, and apply. Let Protective Sealer dwell 3-4 minutes; rinse Hydro Protection Foam immediately.

  7. Final rinse: One last pass with the turbo nozzle or pressure washer to lock in the protection layer.

  8. Streak-free dry: Gently dry with our 1100gsm drying towel for a flawless, spot-free finish. The ultra-absorbent microfibre pulls water away without scratching.

Why This Full Process Beats "Foam and Rinse" Hacks

Quick rinses might look clean at first, but microscopic salt crystals, sand, and dirt stay behind—especially in hard-to-reach spots like wheel arches, underbody, and suspension. Over time, this causes rust (especially after salty beach drives on K’gari or Noosa North Shore) and paint degradation. Our method ensures every contaminant is gone, with protection applied wet-to-wet for maximum bonding.

Quick FAQs:

  • Shade or sun? Always shade—direct sun bakes on spots.

  • How often? Weekly for beach/track users; monthly for regular driving.

  • Pressure washer needed? Ideal, but a garden hose works too.
